Who knew Mary Poppins was around in the Renaissance? Or that ancient tombs can magically turn into aquariums filled with crabs and cows? The world is full of surprises, and some of them are now on display right here on Woodward Avenue.
Starting in August 2018, a selection of our animated classical paintings is lighting up a window of the beautiful Whitney Building. As part of the “Random Acts of Culture” series organized by CultureSource, our exhibition is designed to intrigue and inspire pedestrians in downtown Detroit.
Projected on monitors inside ornamental picture frames, the images at first seem like familiar paintings. But a closer look reveals that the artworks are alive. From floating fish and a moving toy train to mythical apparitions, each painting reveals a hidden meaning – which may or may not come in the form of a meatball. Look closely and you’re sure to find something unexpected in each scene!
