Paper Quilt

Monica Canilao is really great at finding things. A few years ago she was in Detroit preparing to make a huge, intricately sewn fabric of photos, wallpaper, letters, drawings, journal entries and other ephemera reflecting the lives of individuals and families in Detroit. Monica compiled her treasures from lots of sources throughout the city, including demolition sites and scrap piles. This paper quilt of Detroit mementos was commissioned by the Oakland Museum for a show in 2013. We’re thrilled that she decided to bring it back to Detroit and give it a new home at the Seafoam Palace. Until we have a real exhibition space, a few photos of the quilt are here.
